The environmental and social impact of the mass tourist industry is becoming increasingly apparent: the declining concrete Costas; the eroding Alps; crumbing Sphinx; sinking Venice, and cordoned-off Lake District are all testament to the toll that the world’s largest industry takes. The 'build-today, hang-tomorrow' policies are coming home to roost. Sustainable tourism is the only positive way forward. Thankfully now, the mistakes of the past are being recognised and a new breed of tourist is emerging. Travelling independently or in small groups, living as locals caring for the country they are visiting and its peoples, the Good Tourists rake a long-term look at travelling and the world we live in.
